Ways to Keep Your Mind Active This Summer

By Ashley Paskill on May 13, 2018

Summer is often a time where students take time off after a stressful semester and/or year. However, it can be easy to ease up on everything and lose the edge you gained throughout the school year. However, there are things you can do to retain the momentum and stay on top of your brain growth and learning during the lazy, hazy summer days.

1. Visit a new place

Many families or individuals have their go-to vacation spot every year. While this is great, it can also be nice to go to different places. Even if you go to the same beach city, go to a new restaurant or museum in that place to help you expand your horizons and experience new things. Going somewhere new can also be as simple as going to that park you go past every day but have never been to.

2. Eat at a new restaurant or try a new recipe

Do you find yourself going to the same restaurants or eating the same food all the time? Challenge yourself to cook something new. Get a recipe book and make it a point to try a new recipe each week. If you eat out with friends regularly, challenge them to eat somewhere outside of where you normally go and try a new restaurant each month. You never know- you may find your new favorite food.

3. Learn something new outside of your comfort zone

It is easy to stay focused on what you are learning in school, especially since professors and advisors are constantly telling you to stay focused on your major. However, it is important to expand yourself and learn new things. Read a book for pleasure that is outside of your major. Take a class online via Lynda, Udemy, or another online resource. Take up a new hobby and teach your friends as well.
